Ubuntu not loading desktop after logging in?

so um.. i typed my password to login my account and hit enter and it lead me to a blank screen with only desktop, mouse cursor and that Ubuntu 14.04 LTS logo on the bottom left.

what fixed it.

  1. Installed gnome-session-fallback (sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback). Tried logging in through it (by clicking the little ubuntu logo next to my username on the login screen and choosing gnome) and it worked fine. [although i think this is a complete unnecessary step if you know how to create a new user account through terminal]
  2. creating a new user account (system settings > user accounts > (click that unlock button on top) > (then the + sign to add a new account) > (set a password to that account since if you forget this step you cant access the account you just created)
  3. Try logging into the new account just created. if it works fine then the issue was probably something is corrupted in your normal account. for some magical reason, logging out and logging into my normal account worked after this.

 Step 1 - Goto Options > Preferences > Advanced

Step 2 - Turn all these settings to false:
  • offers.left_rail_offer_enabled or left_rail_offer
  • gui.show_plus_upsell
  • offers.sponsored_torrent_offer_enabled or sponsored_torrent_offer_enabled
  • bt.enable_pulse
  • gui.show_notorrents_node
  • offers.content_offer_autoexec

Step 3 - Then restart it.

Don't Have To Type Both Words Of Captcha Code

So you want to mess with recaptcha? The fault of reCAPTCHA lies in the fact that it is used to digitize non-digital texts, as well as stop spam.
What this means is that in every captcha, there will be two words: one that the computer knows is right and will check your text against and one that it hopes to use to digitize text. In other words, reCAPTCHA only needs one word of your captcha to be correct for your captcha to be accepted.
You will be given two words one real one fake. The fake word is unknown to the computer and can be replaced by anything. Lets just type “cat” (typing anything works but "cat" is fun. lol)
Notice how the required word is displayed, i.e. double layered (the same trick is used by Facebook)

How to find out the IP Address of somebody sending you Anonymous messages


So, someone has been getting on your nerves leaving you messages Anonymously?
Well, fear not. Using this method, you can view their IP Address. This can help you figure out who they are! This works for anyone sending you messages, Anonymous or not.
Simply highlight the block link on the message like so:
Then, right click and select “View Selection Source” (or “Inspect Element” in Google Chrome/Chromium):
Then a new window with the source code of your messages page will pop up:
The highlighted (and circled) numbers are the sender’s IP address!
Congratulations! You can now find out the IP Address of anyone who sends you questions, Anonymous or not. Again, this can be very useful if you need to figure out who somebody is.
